Hi all,
I hope you've been having a great week. In this post, I will be going through some common mistakes students make during their real UCAT.
Using SCAN (shape, colour, arrangement, number, symmetry) for every question
Yes, I know I recommended using the SCANS acronym for the AR section, but it's quite time consuming and should only be used as a last resort if you cannot recognise the pattern within the first 10 seconds.
Not triaging questions
I truly believe that a component that the UCAT is testing is students' ability to prioritise and triage effectively. It is very likely that you won't answer all the questions in each subtest and you will find them of variable difficulty. Therefore, you need to practice to recognise your weaknesses so that you’ll know when to skip, guess and flag questions.
Not knowing the Keyboard shortcuts
If you get used to using these shortcuts when practising questions, they can help to save valuable seconds in the test.

If you are using a Mac, you'll need to press control and option e.g. Control+Option+P= previous question.
Missing keywords in a rush
The questions in each subtest, especially VR and DM, are very carefully worded as you probably already know. Under the stressful exam pressure, many students miss words that change the meaning of the question (e.g. only, some, may, can) and therefore the answer too! READ THE QUESTIONS THOROUGHLY, please. Thanks.
Interpreting all the information
The texts in VR, DM and QR can be rather lengthy and wordy to read. There's often extra information in the passage that's not relevant to the question at hand so it is crucial for you to learn the skill of "selective extraction of data". You do not want to be wasting precious minutes reading each figure or table.
I hope that was useful. Now let's move on the more exciting part of this week's newsletter: THE GIVEAWAY!!!
I'm very excited to announce a free one-month MEDIFY UCAT pass (RRP £50) giveaway. I personally used @Medify to study for the UCAT and found it super useful as it replicates the real test format. Also, it’s amazing how much the platform has grown since then, with over 45 hours of video tutorials and 10,000+ practice questions!
You can sign up to Medify using the link in my insta bio or if you already have a subscription you can extend it by a month!
🎉All the information on how to enter can be found on my latest IG post 🎉
